Eric and Stella should never have met, let alone decided to get married. She seemed like a nice girl, someone he could really see himself falling in love with and spending his life with. He was the troublemaker in high school, the boy in detention at least once a week. She was the bitch, the girl who would sleep with anyone who showed her even a little bit of affection and attention. On the outside maybe they did seem like two people who did actually belong together..for one night of wild sex and nothing more. It should have ended after that night, yet somehow they became addicted to one another. They started to crave each other, yearn for attention and the affection. It was only a matter of time before they agreed to stop screwing around and just become a solid item. They started dating senior year of high school, six months down the line she became pregnant, and he proposed. He didn't want to marry her, she didn't want to marry him, but they had no choice. If you get someone pregnant the right thing to do is marry them and raise the child together. She hated being pregnant, everyone looked at her, everyone stared at her, everyone knew she was knocked up by the asshole Eric and what would surly be his demonic spawn. She was disgusted with herself for dating him, getting knocked up by him and of course...marrying him. She lost everything and everyone when she made these decisions. She had to stick by it, though. She was not going to get rid of the baby, "handle" the problem as he so requested. She was going to do everything right by both her and her child..and sometimes Eric.
The obvious unhappiness of the household was hard to ignore, even for the screaming child that was born into it. Riley Harting was born into a life of misery and fear. His parents did not know what love really was, otherwise they never would have agreed to marry each other, it was clear there was none between them. Eric was constantly screaming every time the baby screamed, Stella was hardly around to stop it. she would wake up for the midnight feedings, sleep by his crib on the nights she did spend at home..she tried her best despite her lack of desire to remain around her husband. While they both hated one another, neither believed in divorce which is perhaps why getting married really was a horrible idea. When mutual friends would bring up the topic, they would both insist it would never happen, saying they made a commitment and they would stick it out till the very end. At that time, however Eric was not nearly as bad as he would become over the years, all they did was verbally argue, but nothing that neither one could not live with.
Years went by, Riley grew up, became a teenager, started making his own decisions, falling in with his own friends, finding ways to remain out of the house for as long as possible so that he could avoid the arguing of his parents. When his friends asked why he never wanted to go home, he would just say he has all the freedom in the world, why question it? When asked if they could come over, he never would allow it. His entire life, he never invited a friend over, truth be told very few people even know of the small, cramped apartment he grew up in. While for the majority of his childhood his parents fighting was just screaming, it wouldn't be until he turned fifteen that it would all become so much worse. His fathers drinking became too much to handle, he would come home drunk every night and scream at his wife and child over nothing at all. One day he came home angry that dinner was not ready and slapped his wife across the face. Knowing this was wrong, Riley attacked him, knocked him down and called the police.
After a few days the dust had settled and Riley managed to convince his parents they were all wrong for each other. Eric and Stella entered into couples therapy while Eric also worked on his anger issues, they decided to take some time apart and eventually agreed that divorce would be the only way either one would ever be happy. Riley was proud of his parents for coming to this decision, but still knew he could no longer be around either of them, they were far too destructive for him.
By Seventeen he moved in with his very wealthy grandparents who promised to take care of him and see to it that he is happy. They did not push him to speak with his parents, but did push him to live his life for himself and promised to do everything they could to see to it that he would be happy. The one thing that made him happiest was traveling, getting out of California and seeing what else the country has to offer. Every break from school, every summer vacation he would gratefully accept his grandparents help and money and travel, alone throughout the country. After graduating from high school he took a semester off and traveled throughout Europe, writing down every little adventure he embarked on, all in a big notebook, which eventually spread out into several other notebooks. Being away from his family and his life in Cali was the best thing for him, he got to see what is really out there and really experience life as a whole, once he experienced the real world though it was very difficult to return to his old life.
He did eventually attend college but only because he knew he would be going with his best friend. He attended SDSU where he graduated with a degree in journalism hoping to eventually fall into a career of writing. Of course the real world does not work out as we all wish it would, and currently his best writing can be seen in the obituary section of The Orange County Register. While he may have had a rough childhood, he is now a man with a dream and despite his upbringing, he will stop at nothing to make it come true.
